Ancient Alchemy

Historically, jewelry was worn as a talisman. It was believed that the metals and minerals took on the spirit and vitality of the wearer, an alchemy that occurs when a person slips on a ring or fastens a clasp, their touch revitalizing the elements and bringing ancient resonance into the everyday. 

Alex Diamond’s background in Art History first led to her fascination with Ancient Greek and Roman mythology and the artworks created to honor the gods and goddesses of days past. When creating bespoke ancient coin jewellery, she loves bringing each person’s individual intention into their piece by drawing upon these ancients myths and symbols. The Ancients imprinted their coins with a vast array of characters and creatures, all encoded with an incredibly rich symbolic language. These tiny pieces of ancient art have been held by ancient hands from over two millennia ago and are now safely encased in gold to be worn by you.

Alex Diamond uses the ancient Greco-Roman sculptural technique of lost-wax casting to create jewellery and custom settings for each ancient coin. In this process, she sculpts each piece by melting and carving wax into shape. Molten gold or silver is poured into cast shapes and cooled, which Alex then sands and polishes, forging pieces that are natural and elemental. Each ancient coin is safely set into its own hand-carved gold setting. Re-imagined and brought into the here and now, each piece lends its power to the 21st-century wearer just as potently as in centuries past.

The lost-wax process calls us back to bedrock and awe, to an ancient way of jewelry-making that is brought to life by wearing these pieces that weave ancient and new metal, an act that honors both their origins and their creation.
